Maeve Friel was born in Derry, Northern Ireland and studied sociology at University College Dublin. She worked as a teacher, translator and tour guide before turning to writing full time.

She wrote several short stories for adults which were broadcast by BBC Radio 4 and then wrote ‘Irrational Developments’, a short story inspired by the protests about water shortages in a small Spanish village. It was published in the Sunday Tribune and went on to win the 1990 Hennessy Literary Award.

Since then, Maeve wrote over 20 books for children, including the hugely successful series Witch-In-Training and the Tiger Lily trilogy. Her books have been translated into 13 languages.

Maeve passed away in October 2015. She is greatly missed.
